Unable to update to cod4x on steam linux

I have tried to use the manual updater 21.3. it works only when i launch the game using iw3mp.exe with wine. but game will run on version 1.7 if i lauch through steam. There is no update option and if try to update the game by connecting to a COD4x hosted server the game says “update backend not available, update manually”. Its important for me to play using steam cause i don’t get fps drops when i launch the game through steam instead of manually launching iw3mp with wine. Also i have issues with alt tabing out of game when launching through wine. Can someone please help fix this issue so i can play on COD4x update when i launch with steam.

I am using CachyOs as my distro.

Hi, I think you can install 21.3 on the steam version of CoD4 by following these steps:

  • put the 21.3 installer in the same folder with iw3mp.exe
  • rename iw3mp.exe to iw3mp.exe.orig
  • rename the installer to iw3mp.exe
  • run the game via steam, which will now launch the installer instead
  • after installing is finished, you can remove the installer (iw3mp.exe)
  • rename iw3mp.exe.orig to iw3mp.exe
  • launching the game via steam should open the 21.3 version of CoD4 now.
